The objective of Art is to expand not only physical capabilities and skills in the art field (such as painting and drawing), but creative expression, freedom, and appreciation towards many genres of what is considered "art" as well. The following courses are offered for this subject:
Art 10
Basic course in drawing, design, painting and printmaking. Acknowledges youth culture: pop surrealism, graffiti, painting cels, silkscreen, and anime. Opportunity for personal expression. 3 credits
Sequential activities in drawing, design, painting, sculpture and ceramics. Experimentation with a variety of media. Focus on skill development in technique and composition while celebrating personal creative ideas. 5 credits
Art 20
This course builds sequentially on the conceptual, formal and technical concerns offered in Art 10. However, the emphasis is on personal expression and imagination. Assignments are innovative and unconventional and strive to prompt creative responses. Images from art history to contemporary avant garde art support assignments. 3 or 5 credits
Art 30
Refinement and honing of skills in 2D and 3D media is developed, along with encouraging more independence in selection of course activity. Formal, technical and conceptual goals remain key. There is reference to local art particularly, for art historical support. Creating art work suitable for inclusion in a digital portfolio is the end result of the course. 5 credits
Advanced Placement Art*
Offered in Art 10, 20 and 30, Art AP is described as an amazing intensive art immersion. Creating individually and supportively within multigrade groups. Challenging – expectation of excellence. Imaginative and innovative, made for risk takers. Art history component. 5 credits
